Rosemary Dobson was born in 1920, just over a century ago. After her first book, In a Convex Mirror, was published in 1944, she had a distinguished poetic career, publishing fourteen more books and receiving awards including the 1984 Patrick White Award, an AO and the Australia Council’s prestigious Writer’s Emeritus Award in 1996 and the 2001 Age Book of the Year Award.
Rosemary lived in Canberra for most of her life, and the poets currently recognised at Poet’s Corner in Garema Place were her colleagues, peers and friends. Poets will read her poems at the corner and reflect on how fitting it would be to expand the corner to include her likeness.
The poets reading are: Caren Florance, Melinda Smith, Geoff Page, Suzanne Edgar, Lesley Lebkovicz, Sarah St Vincent Welch and Maggie Shapley. Most of these poets knew Rosemary personally, and will include anecdotes about their connection to her and the significance of her work.
This is a free event. Booking is not required but attendees will be asked to register using the Check In Canberra app.
